The HCG Diet

For those that do not know about the HCG diet here it is in plain English. The HCG diet was created by Dr. Simeons while in Africa. He observed thin African women who ate very little give birth to normal and healthy babies, Dr. Simeons theorized that the HCG that is produced by pregnant women provided a means to keep the babies nourished while still in the womb.

How does HCG work?

The theory is that HCG helps curb appetite but more importantly HCG helps mobilize your fat stores into your bloodstream in order to be used for energy. This is why the need for a calorie restricted diet. It is important to note that in a calorie restricted diet that you will likely lose weight anyway but the body is designed to try to hold on to your fat stores. That is basic human survival. The process of restricting calories can and will result in fat loss but it also results in muscle loss. With the addition of HCG (and smart dieting) you can preserve muscle mass while losing fat at the same time. As mentioned above, the process of introducing your stored fat into your blood stream gives your body the energy it needs to function, thereby helping preserve muscle.

HCG Injections

It is important to note that there has been much debate on the usefulness of HCG drops. The HCG Diet

The HCG diet is a 500 calorie diet that requires alot of water and 2 servings of protein per day. The rest of the calories come from fruit, typically early in the day and from vegetables minus the dressings and oils. The program is typically followed for a month or so with a 6 week break in between the next round of HCG. This is known as a cycle but each cycle has a phase as well and they are as follows:

Phase 1 Loading Phase- Eat what you want, when you want for 3-7 days. It is not just a treat but it tells your body it is not starving and it is ok to let go of fat for energy!

Phase 2 Rapid Weight Loss Phase- For 23-40 days you will be on a calorie restricted diet of 500 calories per day, consisting of fruits, vegetables and 2 servings of protein each day. No dressings or oils allowed.

Phase 3 Stabilization- This Phase is maintained for 3 weeks and also signals the end of your 1st HCG cycle. Here your calories can be increased slightly but you are encouraged to keep your carbohydrate intake low. Your daily calories may come up but you are encouraged to keep them below 1500 per day.

Phase 4 Maintenance- Here you are eating more regularly and hopefully you have started some sort of fitness program to stay toned and strong. This phase should last roughly another 3 weeks so that you are off the HCG protocol for a total of 6 weeks. You may eat more normally here but avoid going over the top, the idea is to eat in moderation and to try to stay close or at your goal weight. If you find you still have some fat to lose then after phase 4 you may begin the HCG Injection protocol again.
